New Year's Day (2024-01-01)

New Year's Day (元旦, Yuándàn) is a one-day national holiday marking the start of the Gregorian calendar year. Banks, government offices and many businesses close.

Book travel in advance as short domestic trips are popular on this long weekend.

Chinese New Year (Spring Festival) (2024-02-10)

Chinese New Year (春节, Chūnjié) is China's most important festival, celebrating the start of the Lunar New Year. The Year of the Dragon begins on 10 February 2024. The official holiday is 7 days but many factories and businesses close for 2–4 weeks.

China's largest travel season. Book all flights and hotels months in advance. Expect massive price surges.

Qingming Festival (Tomb Sweeping Day) (2024-04-04)

Qingming (清明节) is a traditional Chinese festival when people visit the graves of ancestors, clean tombstones, and make offerings. It falls on the 15th day after the Spring Equinox.

Some congestion at cemeteries and parks. Good time to visit natural scenery as spring arrives.

Labour Day (2024-05-01)

International Workers' Day (劳动节) is a major holiday in China. Since 2021 it has been extended to a 5-day holiday, making it one of the three Golden Weeks. Millions travel domestically.

Book tourist attractions and hotels well in advance. Avoid major tourist sites if possible during peak days.

Dragon Boat Festival (2024-06-10)

Dragon Boat Festival (端午节, Duānwǔ Jié) commemorates the poet Qu Yuan and features dragon boat races and eating sticky rice dumplings (zongzi). It falls on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month.

Good time to watch dragon boat racing events in cities like Hangzhou, Guangzhou, and Hong Kong.

Mid-Autumn Festival (2024-09-17)

Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋节, Zhōngqiū Jié) is celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month when the moon is at its fullest. Families gather, eat mooncakes and admire the full moon.

A popular gifting season. Mooncake sales begin 2–3 weeks before the festival.

National Day Golden Week (2024-10-01)

National Day (国庆节, Guóqìng Jié) on October 1 celebrates the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. The week-long holiday is the second major Golden Week and sees hundreds of millions travel.

Most popular tourist sites in China are extremely crowded. Book everything months ahead. Consider travelling internationally.
